Why your rival ranks above you (and it’s not the price)
They’re no cheaper, no better, no bigger — yet they sit above you on Google. It’s frustrating, and it’s fixable. Here are the on-page factors you can actually control.
It’s one of the most galling experiences in business: you search for what you do, in your area, and there’s your competitor — above you. They’re not cheaper. Their service isn’t obviously better. Their site might even look worse. And yet Google keeps putting them first.
The instinct is to assume they’re paying for it, or that Google’s being unfair. Sometimes that’s partly true. But in most cases, the gap comes down to a handful of on-page factors — things entirely within your control. Let’s go through them.
1. Their site clearly says what it does
Google’s job is to match a search to the most relevant page. If your competitor’s homepage says “Family-run plumbers in Horsham — emergency callouts, boilers, bathrooms” and yours says “Quality solutions for your needs”, Google knows exactly what theirs is about. Yours, it can only guess.
Clarity wins rankings. Say what you do, plainly, where it counts — in your page title, your main heading, your opening line. Vague copy is invisible copy.
2. They’ve got a page for each thing
If they do boilers, bathrooms and emergency callouts, they probably have a page for each. You’ve crammed it all onto one services page. Google would far rather rank a dedicated, focused page for “boiler repair horsham” than a general page that mentions it in passing.
One page, one topic — properly explained — outranks a page that tries to cover everything thinly.
3. They’ve claimed their local presence
For local businesses, this is huge. A completed, active Google Business Profile, consistent name/address/phone across the web, and pages dedicated to the areas you cover — all of these signal “this is a real local business” to Google. Many businesses do none of it, then wonder why the local rival wins.
4. Their site is faster and works on mobile
Speed and mobile-friendliness are confirmed ranking factors. If their site loads quickly and works smoothly on a phone, and yours doesn’t, Google will favour theirs — regardless of how yours looks on a laptop. This alone closes a lot of ranking gaps.
5. Their pages have substance
Google increasingly rewards pages that genuinely answer a question or cover a topic in depth. A services page with two vague sentences loses to one that actually explains the service, who it’s for, what’s included, common questions. Useful content — not keyword-stuffed filler — is a real advantage.
6. They’ve earned a bit of trust
Links from other websites, real reviews, an established domain — these all signal credibility to Google. A competitor who’s been around longer, or who’s listed in a few local directories and has genuine reviews, carries trust you may not have yet. The good news: this accumulates over time, and you can start building it now.
7. Their technical setup is clean
None of the above matters if Google can’t read your site — if it’s accidentally blocked, slow to crawl, or missing the basic signals (title tags, meta descriptions, sitemap, structured data). Many businesses lose rankings purely to technical neglect. Clean this up and you’ll often jump several places for nothing.
What it’s not
A few things people assume matter, that usually don’t explain the gap:
- Price. Google doesn’t know or care what you charge.
- How your site looks to humans. Google reads code, not aesthetics. A plainer site can outrank a gorgeous one.
- Paying for ads. Ads don’t help your organic ranking — they’re a separate, paid slot.
- Luck or favouritism. It’s an algorithm following signals, not a grudge.
The honest takeaway
Ranking above a rival is rarely about one big thing. It’s about doing dozens of small things slightly better: clearer copy, focused pages, a real local presence, a faster site, genuine content, clean technical setup. None of it is secret; most of it is just work that gets neglected.
The businesses that win local search aren’t the luckiest or the biggest — they’re the ones who’ve done the basics properly and consistently. Close those gaps and you’ll watch yourself climb.
